Everything is in motion, everything is movement: camera movement, musical movement, movement as a painterly gesture. If there is one element that stands out immediately as a distinctive trait of Giulio De Gennaro's multifaceted personality, it is dynamism, understood both as the energy that moves the universe and as rapidity of action. And it is precisely thanks to his rapid action that we first saw and read Giulio's name in newspapers and on television news worldwide. His were the very first images of what was happening at the Diaz barracks during the dramatic days of the 2001 G8 summit. He was there, a young reporter, documenting the course of events with his camera.
Video is, in fact, the first medium Giulio De Gennaro uses to express himself: moving images without poetic filters, only the eye recording the surrounding reality.
Developing his poetics, despite the immateriality of the image visible only through a screen, he feels the need to accompany it with a graphic gesture, something that persists in one place but can be continuously renewed in the observer's gaze. Hence the first graphic gesture is graffiti, preferably along railway tracks, so that travelers can see it "in motion". The sign is there, motionless in time and space, yet it moves.
The image for him is never static, even if dynamism is rendered differently each time: from the immateriality of video, to the graphic mark of graffiti, to concrete painting action. Over time, it is the gesture that changes, and one could not but find the natural landing place for Giulio De Gennaro: action painting.
Dripping, that is, dripping paint directly onto the support placed on the floor, allows him to move around the canvas and create within it a fluid space, also open to the action of chance. The drops are pixels of a video, fragments of a vision where there is no single perspective, where there is no difference between foreground objects and background. Concrete painting action gives life to the abstract image.
The idea of perpetual motion, of the lively fluidity of elements, is given by the juxtaposition and mixing of colors, as well as by their repetitiveness. Fractals, pixels, black holes; the energy of color and its cancellation: this is the tension that animates Giulio De Gennaro's pictorial production.
For the exhibition in Casacalenda, at the studio of the artist Baldo Diodato, of which Giulio has documented many public and collective art actions, some works from the last five years, from 2015 to today, have been chosen. The dripping technique has been enriched by a voluntary and intentional gesture through which the fusion of colors, lights, and shadows brings out figurative elements, which can be noticed if one approaches.
Also in this case, as it was for graffiti, the recognition of the image generated by the vortex of colors is in the eye of the observer. The viewer is required to intervene, to move to observe the work from different angles and to make an interpretative effort, going to question the folds of their own unconscious and there rediscover the intentions and motivations of the artist.
