Everything is in motion, everything is movement: movement of the camera, musical movement, movement as a pictorial gesture.

If there is one element that is immediately recognizable as a distinctive trait of Giulio De Gennaro's multifaceted personality, it is dynamism, understood both as the energy that moves the universe and as quickness of action. And it is precisely thanks to his quickness of action that we saw and read Giulio's name for the first time on newscasts and in newspapers around the world. The very first images of what was happening in the Diaz barracks during the dramatic days of the 2001 G8 are his. He was there, a young reporter, documenting the drift of events with his camera.

Video is, in fact, the first medium that Giulio De Gennaro uses to express himself: moving images without poetic filter, just the eye recording the surrounding reality.

Developing his poetics, alongside the immateriality of the image visible only through a screen, he feels the need to add a graphic gesture, something that persists in a place but can be continually renewed in the observer's gaze. Thus, the first graphic gesture is graffiti, preferably along the railway tracks, so that travelers can see it "in motion."

The mark is there, immobile in time and space, and yet it moves.

For him, the image is never static, even if the dynamism is rendered differently each time: from the immateriality of video, to the graphic mark of graffiti, to the concrete pictorial action. Over time, it is the gesture that changes, and there could only be one natural landing for Giulio De Gennaro: action painting.

Dripping, that is, dripping color directly onto the support placed on the floor, allows him to move around the canvas and create within it a fluid space, also open to the action of chance. The drops are pixels of a video, fragments of a vision where there is no single perspective, where there is no difference between objects in the foreground and the background. The concrete pictorial action gives life to the abstract image.

The idea of perpetual movement, of the living fluidity of the elements, is given by the juxtaposition and blending of colors, as well as by their repetitiveness. Fractals, pixels, black holes; the energy of color and its annulment: this is the tension that animates Giulio De Gennaro's pictorial production.

For the exhibition in Casacalenda, at the studio of the artist Baldo Diodato, whose many public and collective art actions Giulio has documented, some works from the last five years, from 2015 to today, have been selected. The dripping technique has been enriched by a voluntary and intentional gesture through which the fusion of colors, lights, and shadows brings out figurations that can be noticed if you get closer.

Even in this case, as it was for graffiti, the recognition of the image generated by the vortex of colors is in the observer's gaze. The viewer is required to intervene, to move to observe the work from different angles, and to make an interpretative effort, going to question the folds of their own unconscious and there rediscover the artist's intentions and motivations.
